Permanent incompetence

Today, I saw a group of three people that may or may not have been incompetent, but one of their number chose to walk in the bike lane as opposed to walking on the sidewalk with the other two. This is some degree of either incompetent or entitlement that really needs to be disabused of the multiple generations that have created it. Unfortunately, when I hear about news stories about somebody killed because they were walking in a bike lane and hit by a vehicle, I will think back to this and have less care than I really should.

Stupid people do stupid things. I'm tired of being forced to humor them.

If you do something stupid, that's on you. Done.

I was tempted to take a picture, but even a picture from the back side would have only gained these idiots some notoriety. And they deserve no notoriety.

Forced Opinions

If I'm not forced to have an opinion, I may or may not have one about said thing. (apathy)
If I AM forced to have an opinion about something, probability is that I won't side with whatever agency (person, group, whatever) forced me to have an opinion.(antipathy)
If I am forced to have an opinion about something, and government says I'm supposed to be tolerant of it, I'm more likely to go the Jefferson way and choose to oppose it.  There is some slush to this in that I'm more likely to accept local recommendations than state recommendations and accept state recommendations over federal recommendations. (fairly aggressive antipathy)

Some gays (male or female) are very tolerable.  I tolerate them.  I actively like many.  Easy. (apathy and/or friendship)
Some people tell me that I'm using the wrong pronoun set for certain people.  I care not.  Until that person comes to me and asks me to use a different pronoun set for them when discussing them with other people, I have no reason to not call that person by what I perceive of their physical makeup.

You want me to not care about you.  This is apathy.  If you force me to care about you and whatever you think you are, then you've forced me to care about what you are.  This is antipathy.  This is a lesser form of hate.  If you want me to not hate you, don't make me care about you.  Making me care about you, by force, ends badly, If I care about you organically, I may care, or not.  That's better than the hate.

Some folks better learn... and fast.

Unintentional taunting

Some places so forcibly project positivity that there is little question given to the inherent negativity that may be present.  The key concept here is projection of positivity. While at the location, any negativity perceived by a customer (no, they are not a guest) is jarring and potentially a reason to summon a manager.

One place this is notable is environmental music of the location.  Often this is done by some clueless person tasked with music selection to match some generic venue-style, approved by some moron tasked with approving such things.

The obvious idiocy and failure of corporate bureaucracy deserves little note but no positive otherwise.

Someone chose these things to be something that would probably be comforting to consumers at the location.  This is all well and good.  But, to a person that is seasoned in the location that is no longer a fan of the location, some songs become more of a taunt.

"Put on a happy face" (not sure of title or artist)
No. My happy face is miles from here.  I might be able to fake a veneer.

Taxes profitmongering

I recently filed my taxes.  Meh.

Federal government owed me money. No surprise.
Indiana wanted more money, on the order of about 66% of what I was getting back in Federal refund.  Seemed excessive, but whatever.

Filed the taxes anyway.  To pay State, was sent to some mostly non-descript site for paying all manner of "government" payments, and as a not-logged-in person, it didn't ask who or what I was paying for.
For a $315 bill, it wanted to charge me a nearly $8 (7.8?) fee to use a card.

I'm sorry, but I'm not.  If this is the payment system you have, it can go unmentionable itself.  Bill me.  I'll send a money order at a cost of maybe a couple dollars, but I will not pay your "convenience" fee.

I hope I'm not the only person to have this annoyance and choose to skip the "convenience" provider, putting said provider out of business.

I'm tired of being treated like a money-source.  EVERY state should be "retired" at this point, with enough money in the bank and investments to support itself without needing ANY taxpayers. States and the federal government were stupid and didn't do this.  That's on them.

How are you doing?

So many people ask the question, "How are you doing?" that any thinking person has a number of canned retorts to respond to this.

One of my standard retorts is, "I think I'll live." which may be followed up, depending on receiver with, "I'm not sure how to feel about that." (or very similar)

The purpose of this interaction with people is twofold.  I am dark. This is probably immutable.  In spite of this, I can and do humor humor.

Big afterthought:
I was going to add parenthetical things to clarify points. I chose not to because people that could be confused by my minor points or wit would be confused in general.  Even trying to help them find the general direction of "up" would be a challenge.  So, I left my thoughts mostly as-is.

Nepotism

In general, nepotism seems to be loathed. The reasoning for this used to be logical. But after additional scrutiny, there does seem to be some very good reasons for nepotism to occur.

You'd be amazed at how many unloyal people there are within your family. You should also be amazed at how many unloyal people there are outside of your family.

What should really disturb people is how many people think that government owns your business because government owns everything and thus knows you owe them a job. Never mind that they are unloyal to friends, family, and father big government... Or mother, or whatever.

Permanent stupidity

Stephen Crowder said something like this in one of his clips.  I take no credit for the original thoughts from which I went even moreso.

The left and most of the media (I admit there may be significant redundancy there) seem to be constitutionally (by their constitution, for clarity) unable to get out of their own way.

Trump is not a great person.  This is obvious to anyone that is paying a shred of attention.

The left are, on the other hand, trying like hell to make him look foolish, evil, etc. In doing this, the left forcibly magnify themselves to no good end.  Instead of talking about what Trump may or may not have done or may or may not have said, the annoyance of people with the left just continues unbounded because the left just keep adding fuel to the fire instead of just SHUTTING THE FUCK UP.  But the left just doesn't comprehend it because its members can't (constitutionally unable, remember).  So instead of proper criticism of the president occurring as it should, all the hate is being directed where it should, which is to say media/"journalists"/leftists.

The empty can (the left and their ilk in media/"journalism") rattles the most.  Until said can starts to fill (wisdom/knowledge is a good start) or the can chooses to not rattle, [the rattling can] and not [the attempted message of the rattling can] will get the attention (contempt) and be ignored or hated, rightfully so.

Employment

Let me start with a trick question.
Are there currently enough jobs for everyone to be employed?  (hint: It's a trick question)

If you answer Yes or No, you've fallen for the bait and gotten it wrong.

When government, be that global, national, regional, or local, get out of the way of people to fairly trade goods and services with each other as they see fit, there don't need to be "enough jobs".

If every person expects to have some job provided for them, they are robbed of the freedom and creativity to look around and say, "Hey.  People would be better off if they could use widgets.  Maybe I should make and sell widgets." or, "Hey, that guy's lawn is thick.  Maybe he'd be interested in paying me to trim it for him." etcetera, so on, so forth.

Yes, within this analysis and creativity, there is plenty of room for someone to take the step further and say, "You know, I could hire others to do what I'm doing and we would mutually benefit. They would gain my reputation and I would get some part of the profits from their efforts."  THIS is the essence of what employment is (in the form of jobs).

When government starts "creating jobs" it is only because they are capable of extorting the money for said jobs from people that are actually producing something (a good or service). And you can bet your bottom dollar (and that's always the one the government wants, isn't it?) that the "job" they create will employ the least of the competent to do something that nobody wanted done in the first place.

Did I recently hear about openings for dangerous furniture inspectors, or did I just nightmare that?

Ghandi reconsidered

Once, I thought that Ghandi had screwed up the math about how to deal with the tyrannical regime with which he was dealing.

My thinking has shifted slightly and I'm thinking that he may not have been wrong.

Some "leaders" (managers, "representatives", senators, so on) under whose authority we are currently placed are clearly oblivious to how hated they are.  This is unsurprising when it is considered from the outside and it is obvious that the mindless or misinformed followers of said "leaders" create an echo chamber where the "leaders" only hear what they want and never hear ... truth.

This is systemic of tyrants...  I could call some out by name, but it would never get through their echo chamber or even cause them even a moment's pause if it did get to them.

In the end, I think that Ghandi's actions had little to no direct effect on the actual leaders he was trying to identify or the evils he was trying to point out.  I think his actions worked more indirectly by assisting others to realize the evils (both policy and persons) that were very wrongfully being permitted to continue.

Unrequested "corrections"

Google is great (and I say that without reservation) at pointing out possible typos or alternate spellings for things that I may have gotten wrong.

But, there are SO MANY times that I have spelled something perfectly where some stupid recommendation comes up for something else, like "to" to "too" or whatever.  But, the recommendation lingers there in spite of the correct results being listed, and there is no link or button or something for, "Yes, I typed it right.  Leave it alone."  type of button or link or whatever.

Yes. Sometimes I type things wrong.  Or things are transcribed wrong (that's also on Google if the transcribing agent is not considering context, in most cases) so the results are off.  And I will choose to click/tap/whatever the correction.  But, especially from non-mobile devices, I am not a twit and I will not type like a twit.  When I type, it is generally purposeful.  If I type and whatever algorithm thinks I made an error, recommend the fix, but also include an option for, "No, I didn't make a mistake. Adapt thyself."

Are you sure you didn't mean "too" instead of "to"?  No.  Google should know me better. (or from prolonged sneaky experience with me with and without my knowledge, Google should)  So, give me an option for "Your recommendation is a failure."

I would hope that enough "idiot links" (as I call them), unclicked would cause said links to expire eventually.  But with the quantity of idiots growing daily, I can't count on that.  I would just hope that Google can distinguish between idiots and not (if Google is not capable to the task, then the task is failed permanently) and at least offer "No. I intended what I typed." links/buttons for people that appear to have some wisdom.

Meh

Cost increases of "medical" things are a cross-junct of insurance (a bet against oneself) and governmental control.  People that are "suffering" from over-cost drugs because of choices they intentionally made (supporting insurance or government involvement) brook no sympathy from me.  They chose their bed.  Now they have to slumber in it.

If insurance hadn't been a thing, there would be no problem.  If government intervention hadn't happened because insurance had gone wrong, there would (again) not be a problem.  That people are unhappy because X caused Y and then Y (because some clueless people didn't realize their cluelessness) caused Z, I care not.  Or more precisely, I'm hateful of the people that caused X, Y, and Z, because they should have known better.  They or their parents or grand parents (etc) chose this and the choice was made to not fix it and complain about it instead. (most often in the form of government intervention)
I choose to refuse to care.  If your default reaction is to choose to get government involved instead of dealing with things yourself, I choose to refuse to care about you.

If government is your god, then as a human, I have no reason whatsoever to humor you because you're worshiping a false god.

Some people seem confused why I'm so cold and distant from their "problems" and they don't understand why I don't care.  The obvious causality of it seems to miss them entirely.  Meh.

Chivalry, decimated

It used to be that people did nice things for women, just because it was the right thing to do.
Feminists and liberals hate this, assuming emotionally with no math to support it, that it makes the woman look weak.
In spite of this, I've tried to be a gentleman and show (rightfully) deference and respect to women. But, some real idiots have gotten control of the language and the political apparatus and have made gender and sex completely meaningless.

So while I was on the bus stop waiting for the bus I thought to say, "ladies first" and wave the person that I somewhat assumed to be female on in front of me, ...but then I thought there's no value in this because gender and sex are meaningless and therefore I don't have any reason to show any deference to anybody. So I didn't. I was the closest to the bus. So when the bus pulled up and opened the doors I stepped on first. If anybody thinks that this is wrong, they may be right, but you know what, this was all driven by feminism and political correctness, so screw everybody.

If I have to play by their rules, then screw them when their rules end up destroying the things of value.

So many idiots really love the concept of equality. Wish granted. I will treat everybody equally. Everybody has a value of zero.

Date Schemes

I keep seeing dates, especially on TV (which may be all that is needed to be known), in the form [9/8/16]. I then have to wonder what idiot created the ad, and what idiot directed creation of the ad such that it uses such a date scheme.

First off, we're only 16 years since (the dreaded) Y2K. Why are we not all using 4 digit years? Did some really stupid people just not learn anything?  Yes, our species has a history of refusing to learn from mistakes... but I refuse to accept that. (So, maybe I'm refusing to learn that others are just too stupid to learn...)  Using only a 2 digit year, regardless of order is inexcusable.  Without 4 digits, there's no way of knowing 2016 from 1916 or 1816 or 0016.
Then, there's the day/month order.  If your date is going to be meaningful AT ALL, then there should be some order of magnitude.  Europeans (and a fair bit of the rest of the planet, I'd wager) write dates in the form [8 September 2016] (long form) or [8/9/2016] (short form).  Many that use computers, or other devices that tend to automagically sort most things alphabetically, tend to use the [2016/09/08] notation (year/month/day) or [2016-09-08] (because the "/" is a "special character" that functions poorly in filenames), and this is for the obvious reason of having things (quite logically) kept in a chronological order, instead of having all the September items for several years or decades together, then all the October items... etc., or worse, everything that happened on a 8th of some month of some year, then 9th of some month of some year... etc.

Maybe it's just a problem with American broadcasters and/or advertisers.
1.) It could be that the broadcasters/advertisers are idiots.  No fix for that except to stop watching.
2.) It could be that the broadcasters/advertisers are targeting idiots.  But, in that case, don't you think they'd try to improve their audience instead of dumbing things down?
3.) It could be that American broadcasters/advertisers are just stuck in the same stupid mud that has kept the US on the imperial system which (hint, hint) the British (Empire) has abandoned in favor of the metric system, so continuing to use an out-dated, crappy date scheme just seems natural to them.  In which case, the broadcaster/advertiser is an idiot and refer back to point 1.

Maybe I just don't get it.  Hopefully I never will.  I'm OK with that.  At some point I don't want to see a date in the form [9/8/16] and understand it without having to translate it into something useful.  I want to sneer at whoever forced me to translate it and know that my thought process hasn't been catastrophically damaged by the retards (literal meaning, "delayed in growth") that continue to use it.

Predictions

For all that follows, the precondition is that Ted Cruz was eliminated in either the primary or general election process.

I predict:
The internet, within the US either becomes very cost prohibitive or quits entirely.
Health care providers, already gut-punched by Barry decide it isn't worth it anymore and give up... with members possibly joining militias that actually feed and support them and their families.
Workers that are fired, with or without cause (most, without), decide that working just isn't productive, and they give up on looking for employment since their work (or their employer) feeds government... which destroyed their last job.

Distilled:  When evil takes over things, and it has been for some time, people that are capable of doing things surrender and stop doing things.  There's no point, and when a thing is done, government wants its pound of flesh for it having been done. There is an exception for friends and maybe friends of friends.  Those rare exceptions tend to be done with zeal.

democrat/miserable-person

Have I ever mentioned that the song "My Friend of Misery"  (circa 1991) by Metallica really does seem to describe the democrat condition?  (yes, it is an illness and a condition)
Followers of the Clintons... followers of Barry... All some special form of stupid.
Followers of Sanders seem to be some special form of special (which is to say stupid).  They're gleeful.  They're happy.  They seem to have no idea what kind of creeping doom they've invited into their bed.

What's really sad is that even though I'm not even 40 years old, I'm really getting to a point where I no longer care.  As Forest Gump said (and rightfully so), "Stupid is as stupid does."

If you think I'm talking about you... I probably am.  You have two choices: Realize it and grab a clue, or just keep being an idiot.  I no longer care.

Freedom!

Let me go right out on the limb and remain there by saying I love freedom.

There are a very small number of things that I would put forth as valid reasons to limit freedom.
  • You may not murder.  (self defense or defense of others is justifiable).
  • You may not rape.  (Being seduced by a child that does arguably know what they're doing does not count.  It may be stupid on the adult's part, but it should not be criminal.)
  • You may not use coercion on other people.  (Employees should not be exploited, but employees should be free to leave at any point, with or without reason.  Conversely, employers should be free to dismiss employees at their discretion.)
That's pretty much it.   Any law that is above or beyond the above list is probably misguided at best and evil/liberal more likely.

So, I like freedom.  I love freedom.  I'm out on that limb, and I'll remain there, using claws to attack those that think freedom is an old or useless fad.
Yes!  Some stupid people will do some very stupid things with the freedom they've been granted.

If you're a democrat, I probably hate you, not because of who you are, but because of what you represent.  You're a very small dictator, and probably not a loved one.
If you're a "progressive", see "democrat" above.  I don't have time to elaborate.  If any of the above seems "less controlled" than you like, you're likely a dictator that just didn't realize it.  Fix your head, and you may be salvageable.  Elsewise, expect me to hate your anti-freedom-ness.
Republicans [hangs head] start to weary me.  Freedom used to be the rule.  Some still follow this, but too many have turned dictatorial.

There I am.  There I'll stay.  I love freedom.  If you think otherwise, I probably want to smack you until you finally get it.  (but that would probably constitute assault under current laws, so I restrain myself)

EU (ew?) cookie policy

If you have the misfortune to live in a place controlled by a european legislature, this is my official notice that I don't care any tiny bit about the stupid legislation that declares that people must disclose a site's cookie policy.

What's worse I feel sorry for EVERYBODY that has to deal with the the results of this in the form of fairly intrusive boxes, dialogs, and other crap that demand that a person read and accept that a site is using cookies to continue using said site.  If a user is too uninformed to know what a cookie is or that sites may be doing bad things with them, too friggin' bad.  No action by any moronic legislature is going to stop bad people from using people's ignorance against them.

To clarify my position, I am not personally using cookies on this blog to do anything.  Since it's hosted on blogger (Google essentially), they may be using cookies to disambiguate visitors from each other, or whatever.  I don't care, and you probably don't either.  Further, I think that you and your other continent-men should start putting in power some legislators that will reverse idiotic laws like this.  If you do care, and you think the legislation was a good idea, I welcome and invite you to go wander off and read something else, because you're some horrible, stinking form of unsalvageable.

That's my cookie policy.  I'm not tracking you.  Google may be.  Meh.  I don't care.  If you care, you have the option to leave.  Use it.  Take your governments with you.

Leadership...

When the Russian leadership makes the american (uncapitalized intentionally) leadership look like fools, there's really something to be said.  I'm not sure what that thing is that should be said, but it cannot be good.

Woefully lacking predators

Once upon a time, a friend of mine, and I came to the realization that one of the reasons the species had gotten lazy, sloppy, stupid, and a number of other things was because we lacked something resembling a proper predator.

Humans, as a group and individually, become a bit stupid and lazy in general without upward pressure.  Sometimes this pressure comes in the form of an enemy to be defeated, such as during World War I and II.  Other times it exhibits because there is a predator that must be defeated or avoided.  Minus this upward pressure, the species has this tendency to generate some silly illusions of stability.  Preemptively, I will say that "caste systems" and "slavery" are mechanisms that while "unfair" do tend to generate a semblance of stability.  Then, there's another number of misguided people that would see something (that appears to be) more powerful (than themself) and they would try to make a god from the thing, and start worshiping it, leading to human sacrifice and other horrors.

He suggested that humans are naturally the only real predator for humans.  I agreed, but lamented the fact that humans being humans, most underestimate the capacity of fellow humans to be truly inhumane creatures.  As such most humans are incapable of seeing their fellow humans as predators that must be defeated or avoided.  So, humans just aren't enough of a threat to be taken seriously until it is too late.  I guess that's the hallmark of a great predator.  The predator isn't noticed until it is too late.

Then, humans being humans, entirely too many are incapable of learning anything from experiences that are not their own.  They can see another person being attacked and totally omit any possibility from their thinking that the same thing could happen to them.  As thinking goes, we're a pretty dense species.

I have lamented a lack of zombies, vampires, werewolves, hostile space aliens... pick a poison.  I continue to.  In the face of zombies, stupid causes like "climate change", welfare, immigration "equality", "gay marriage", eat the rich, and a host of other stupid (typically liberal led) causes would not just take a back burner, but they'd be thrown off the stove because they're useless.  On the plus side, zombies would willingly comply with gun-free zones, and kill people anyway.

From the "religion of peace" (which in all honesty is repressive and hasn't really ever been peaceful) has arisen ISIS.  The behavior of these predators can only truthfully be categorized as predatory.  And yet again, humans just don't get it.  The american president doesn't get it.  Most of the american public doesn't get it.  (the anti-capitalization isn't a typo, it's on purpose)

I wished for a better predator.  As the djinn's warning goes, "Be careful what you wish for.  You just might get it."  Well, we got it.  It hasn't helped one bit.  I still want zombies, or vampires, or aliens (from space, not Mexico).

Oh well.  I'll keep wishing and hope it eventually doesn't backfire.

What a NAS should and should not be

This is one of my rants. Some people may disagree with the “bias” of the following. But I, killermist, WILL NOT assist anyone in doing any of the things listed below. Those things are things that a NAS should not be doing.

A NAS should be many things.

First and foremost, a NAS should be a storage system. In order to be a storage system that is useful (what good is storage if you can't get it to store or retrieve things?), it must include file transfer protocols (some of which are referred to as “streaming”, which is a fairly useless designation, in general). This carves out a giant area that a NAS should do. And it should do those things expertly. ZFS creates a very stable storage platform. UFS can be used if you don't care about the integrity of your data, because it doesn't checksum the data, and it will gleefully return corrupted data to you as if it were 100% healthy. The list of valid and useful protocols for reading, writing, and moving files is quite comprehensive. NFS, SSH/SSHFS/rsync, SMB and HTTP make up a very comprehensive and useful block. Bittorrent, as a long-running, random availability protocol adds some very useful flexibility. AFP and novelty protocols like UPnP or iTunes add some misguided but commonly requested stuff and can round out a protocol set pretty completely.
That being said, there are a good number of things that a NAS should not be. Further, the list of things that a NAS should not be are things that really should never be supported. Asking me how to install ANYTHING will likely red-flag you as someone that is probably beyond help.
Hint: A good NAS, capable of using the power of ZFS is probably based on FreeBSD. It is probably NOT based on Linux (mostly because of license reasons). So, while some knowledge gained from learning to administrate a Linux system may apply, A LOT of how Linux works is completely invalid in dealing with a good NAS distribution. For almost every action in a good NAS system, using the CLI (SSH or connected screen/keyboard) is entirely the wrong method since the WebGUI should be where configuration changes are made. Furthermore, the "sudo" command, that many Linux people have grown accustomed to, does not exist. Asking why it isn't “installed by default” or why it “can't be installed” is likely to be met with groans and facepalms.
Among the things that a NAS should not be are the following items, which make up a non-complete list.
  • Usenet downloader - You should be using some other machine to do that. Using the NAS to store the results, through a mounted share, great. But A NAS should not be that. There are many low-cost, low-power solutions for little headless tasks like that. Pushing the NAS to do them is not wise.
  • Database server - Again, using another machine to run a database server, and storing the database data on a NAS, great. But a NAS is not intended to handle database serving duties. Again, many low-cost, low-power solutions exist to do this. Hey, it could even be your Usenet downloader box…
  • Media transcoder - This includes the (misguidedly included) transcoding in UPnP. The processing power and ram of the NAS are supposed to be used for moving hard drive data to/from the network, and not mangling that data along the way for “compatibility” with woefully incompetent devices. If your device isn't compatible with your media, then either fix the media or fix the device. Transcode the data yourself, or get a media player that works right. And no, game consoles are not a good choice for playing media. Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying to you, possibly because they've been lied to them-self. Programs like Handbrake make it really easy to transcode your videos into a format that competent devices can play. But it will require another machine to chug away at the video for a while, depending on the quality level you're demanding of it. But demanding transcoding from the NAS will only slow things down and make responsiveness worse.
  • Virtual Machine Host - Again, the processing power and ram of the NAS are supposed to be used for moving hard drive data to/from the network. Wasting your CPU time or memory on running virtual machines means that those resources are unavailable to other more important tasks, like making sure the data can get to/from the network in an expedient manner. In particular, if your NAS only had the recommended quantity of ram for the size of your ZFS storage to begin with, it is especially unwise to take any of that ram away. Even the setup, configuration, and especially troubleshooting of jails (which are virtual-machine-like), which tend to be an included technology in FreeBSD, are a bad idea. So, when someone sets up a jail, and then breaks anything, they will find no help from me for fixing their mess.

Common nonsense

To address some grumbling I can already hear forming, here's some retorts to what I know people are probably about to ask:
  • “But, bittorrent is included in a number of NAS solutions. Why not have [X]?” – Transmission is an annoying double-edged sword. It uses the bittorrent protocol to help move files to and from the NAS. Just like NFS, SSH, or SMB. This makes it a valid and useful protocol. In particular, this is a question most commonly asked by people wanting Usenet downloading or other file-leeching mechanisms. Neither of these is a server-like function, which is pretty essential to how a NAS works. If I had to choose to either add these other non-server functions or to remove bittorrent, I'd willingly jettison bittorrent as a supported protocol for the sake of the rest of the system.
  • “But my media player uses UPnP and needs things to be transcoded on the fly.” – Get a media player that isn't crap. TV and game console manufacturers have gotten really lazy and bought into the lie and simplicity (stupidity) of adding a broken protocol that then permits them to slap on the “media ready” sticker to their product. Consider these:
Scenario 1, I transcode my media once on a client machine and store it on the NAS to play to my media player using SMB. I spend the CPU time ONCE ONLY. I'm also doing it on a machine that isn't the NAS, so the network isn't suffering from a slowed NAS while the encode occurs. And I'm left with a nice pretty file as the result of that spent CPU time. Two, three, 10, even 100 devices can all play video via SMB with no problem provided there's enough network bandwidth and raw disk speed.
Scenario 2, some fool uses UPnP to stream files to some broken thing, like PS3/4 or Xbox-something. Every friggin' time a file gets played, CPU time must be wasted (more energy usage and cost, duh) to reencode it on the fly. Worse, all this wasted CPU time leaves no result for having been wasted. Further, because the NAS (and not some other machine) is wasting CPU time encoding, every other task on the NAS has less CPU time available. Simultaneous encodes because of simultaneous viewers can seriously waste CPU time and kneecap NAS performance.
